Shiatsu is a form of body work, or physical therapy, developed in Japan during the twentieth century. Its origin lies in the ancient Chinese arts of Do-In (Tao Yin) and anma. Do-in is akin to Yoga while anma somewhat resembles western massage. Recognition of Shiatsu in Japan came just after the turn of the twentieth century, its popularity over other methods among the public there has flourished since the 1930’s.
Shiatsu combined the ancient and traditionally holistic approach of anma; with its concept of Ki and the meridians and points of that system, with a focus on anatomy, the autonomic nervous system, and internal organ functioning, and psychology from western medicine.
Shiatsu emphasises restoring harmony to the body, through lifestyle adjustments and body work therapy.
