What does Shiatsu mean?
Shaitsu translates literally from the Japanese as “finger pressure”. It is a Japanese form of body work which is designed to heal and promote health by influencing and improving the state of Ki flowing through the body.
What is Ki?
Eastern medicine suggests that all living things posses a life force, and that the relative condition of this force (Ki, Chi, Qi, Prana variously) defines our state of wellness or illness.
What are meridians?
Ki flows throughout your body along pathways called meridians or channels.
Why haven’t I heard about Ki before?
You may not have come across the concept of Ki before because Western Medicine currently has no equivalent concept of life force. This makes current Western medicine unique as it is the only medical system not to have this concept.
What will happen during my first Shiatsu treatment?
Firstly your needs and requirements will be discussed with Simon. He will then ask you a few relevant questions about your health history, and make notes to aid diagnosis and treatment. This usually takes around 30 minutes and is free. Naturally, confidentiality with regards to any and all information divulged is assured.
Please bring details of any medications you have been prescribed.
Then the treatment will begin. You will be asked to lie down (or sit if you are unable to lie down), and Simon will begin to work on various meridians and acupressure points according to your needs. This typically lasts for one hour.
Will it be painful?
The main aim of Shiatsu is to promote the smooth flow of Ki. Pain can cause Ki to cease flowing naturally, so Simon will always ask you how you feel during the treatment in order to apply the appropriate pressure for you.
What should I wear?
Preferably you should wear clothes that are loose, comfortable, and made from natural fabrics (cotton, silk, hemp fibre etc) as these allow your skin to breathe.
How many treatments will I need?
This depends entirely on your reasons for receiving Shiatsu. So if you are in relatively good health and simply require a boost, one treatment followed up at your convenience should suffice.
If you are trying to regain your health from illness then the prognosis is longer usually, and a course of treatments is recommended. This will enable Simon to gain more insights as to how to best help you.
Will Simon need to contact my G.P?
Simon will only make contact your G.P in special circumstances and only with your consent.
How much will a treatment cost and how long will it last?
Your first treatment will usually last for an hour and a half including the free consultation. Treatments after that will usually last for an hour. Each treatment costs £35. Concessions and discounts are available.
What concessions or discounts are available?
Discounts are available when you book a course of 3 or more treatments in advance. The current discount rate is £25 per session for a typical client, but you may qualify for more if you are on low income (i.e. pensioner, student, or claiming benefits).
Please contact Simon directly to find out more.
